Three bones in Poppy’s spine were fractured, and a team of pediatric neurosurgeons and spinal specialists was working desperately to relieve the pressure on her spinal cord. I sat on the cold hospital floor, gripping my phone with trembling hands. I had called my parents twelve times, praying they would answer and come to the hospital to support us. Not one of them picked up. At precisely 7:15 p.m., my younger sister, Gwen, called me on FaceTime. I answered immediately, a wave of relief washing over me. Perhaps someone in my family had finally remembered that Poppy was fighting for her life. But the moment the screen appeared, my relief disappeared. So stop fishing for sympathy and ruining my celebration!” I opened my mouth to respond, but before I could utter a single word, she ended the call. I stared at my phone in disbelief. How could my own sister be so heartless? She hadn’t even asked whether Poppy was alive. And seeing my parents smiling and celebrating in the background made their refusal to answer my calls hurt even more. Seconds later, my mother called. I answered immediately, holding on to a tiny bit of hope. Maybe she had finally remembered that her granddaughter was undergoing emergency surgery. Instead, she greeted me with an angry shout. “Brooke! We’ve got a serious problem!” I blinked, confused. “Two waitresses just quit, and the university provost’s table is covered in dirty dishes!” For a moment, I couldn’t process what she was saying. My daughter was fighting for her life, and my mother was calling me to complain about dirty plates. Then she delivered an order that left me speechless. “I want you at the country club immediately! I remained motionless, staring at the dark screen in my hand. My own mother had threatened to disown me because I refused to abandon my severely injured daughter to work for free at my sister’s graduation party. They had absolutely no idea who I really was. To my family, I was a struggling freelancer who earned around $35,000 a year doing basic data-entry work from home. They had no clue that I was actually the founder and owner of a medical software company valued at $40 million. My technology was being used across four hundred hospital systems. They also didn’t know that the luxury cars they drove, their exclusive country club memberships, and even Gwen’s extravagant graduation celebration were funded through accounts I controlled. I had quietly paid their bills for years because I believed family should come before recognition. I never needed them to thank me. I simply wanted to help the people I loved. But sitting outside my daughter’s operating room, I finally understood something I should have realized long ago. They had mistaken my generosity for weakness.
