Part2 : Dad stared at me like I had slapped him. For several seconds nobody moved. Then Ethan walked slowly toward the Tacoma. He didn’t run. That was what hurt me most. A sixteen-year-old boy who had just been handed the keys to the truck he had talked about for almost two years should have been running. Instead, he looked like he was afraid being happy would somehow make things worse. Mason broke the silence first. “Can I see it?” Ethan looked surprised. “Yeah. Sure.” The two boys walked toward the truck together. That should have ended the tension. It didn’t. Dad grabbed my arm. “What were you thinking?” I pulled free. “I was thinking about my son.” He glared at me. “You made Mason’s gift look cheap.” Daniel finally spoke. “Come on, Dad. Nobody said that.” Dad snapped toward him. “Stay out of this.” Daniel’s expression changed immediately. I recognized it. We had both worn that expression throughout childhood. Dad had a way of giving something generously and then turning the gift into a weapon. He bought Daniel his first car, then reminded him about it for ten years. He helped me with college tuition for one semester, then mentioned it at every Thanksgiving until I finally wrote him a check for the exact amount. Dad didn’t believe gifts were gifts. He believed they created debt. Mom quietly began collecting paper plates from the picnic table, pretending she couldn’t hear us. I lowered my voice. “You gave Ethan ten dollars.” Dad replied, “That wasn’t the point.” I asked, “What was the point?” He folded his arms. “He needs to learn humility.” I stared at him. “He’s sixteen.” “Exactly.” “And Mason doesn’t need humility?” Dad looked offended. “Mason earned that car.” I almost asked how. Instead, Ethan’s voice came from behind me. “Dad.” I turned. He stood beside the Tacoma with Mason. “Can I take him around the block?” I said, “Not without me.” Ethan nodded. “Fair.” I took two steps toward him when Dad spoke again. “That truck stays here.” I stopped. “What?” He raised his voice. “You heard me.” Now several relatives were openly watching. Dad pointed toward the Tacoma. “You are not turning my grandson into some spoiled little brat just because you have money to throw around.” Ethan’s face tightened. That was enough. “You don’t get to decide what happens to my property or my son.” Dad shot back, “This is my house.” I answered, “And that is my truck.” Daniel stepped between us. “Guys, seriously.” Dad ignored him. “You always do this.” I frowned. “Do what?” “Compete with me.” I stared at him. Then I understood. This was never about Ethan. It probably wasn’t even about Mason. Dad had imagined himself as the center of the afternoon. He would hand Mason the keys. Everyone would admire his generosity. Ethan would stand there with his gift card and learn his assigned place in the family hierarchy. And I had disrupted the performance. “You thought this was your moment,” I said. Dad’s eyes narrowed. “You wanted everyone watching Mason thank you.” He snapped, “He should thank me.” “He did.” “That’s not what I mean.” I held his gaze. “I know.” The silence after that was different, because other people understood too. My aunt Linda looked away. Daniel slowly lowered his phone. Even Mom stopped pretending to clean. Dad realized he had said too much. So he changed tactics. He turned toward Ethan. “You know, that truck costs money to maintain. Gas, insurance, tires. Maybe your father forgot to explain that.” Ethan’s shoulders dropped. Before I could answer, Mason did. “Grandpa, stop.” Everyone looked at him. Mason stood beside the Civic keys in his hand. “You already gave me the car. Ethan getting something better doesn’t take mine away.” Dad looked stunned. Mason continued, “And Ethan helped you every weekend last summer. I didn’t.” Daniel blinked at his son. Dad’s jaw tightened. “Go enjoy your car.” Mason replied, “I am.” Dad said sharply, “Then stay out of adult conversations.” Mason shook his head. “No.” That single word changed the entire afternoon, because Dad was accustomed to controlling sons. He wasn’t prepared for grandsons who had stopped being children.
